  16. You can, if y'like.  I've actually been considering unsubscribing from
  17. nexus-gaia, as a couple of other mailing lists have begun to take over my
  18. life.  I'd be happy to tell you all I know about 'em, though, if you
  19. want any info.

  21. The Armory has run as a successful nexus for over three years, now.  It
  22. was only recently that Echo Street and The Resort got online, but they
  23. have better equipment.

  25. We all name the houses in Santa Cruz.  I lived in The Burrow, Quack House, and
  26. House of Wrath while I was there.

  28. The three online are on somewhat different models.  The Armory's a benign
  29. dictatorship, with John (spcecdt@armory.com) the Man on the Lease.  He
  30. keeps things running fairly smoothly, even through the occasional comings
  31. and goings of members.  He's wired every single appliance in the house
  32. through deeptht.armory.com, either through wires or with a broadcaster
  33. for the things that have remote controls.  One VCR's wired to almost
  34. every room in the house, and there's a terminal in most of the bedrooms,
  35. as well as five downstairs for folks who wander in. Last I heard, he was
  36. working on linking up the phones to do intercom/transferring.  It's
  37. mostly students and half-students, with a smattering of computer pros.

  39. Echo Street is an ex-fraternity house, that four or five people got
  40. together and bought.  There're three or four other people living there
  41. as well, depending. The owners all work at UCSC, SCO, Apple, HAL, and such,
  42. and have more techtoys than I've ever seen in one place.   They rent
  43. out the rooms to other folks, and sort of govern by informal
  44. parliment. I'm only acquaintences with them, and I'm sure you could
  45. get better information from any one of 'em.

  47. The Resort is an anarchy, though not on purpose.  It just turned out that
  48. way.  My best friend lives there, but the house only really got together
  49. after I moved away, so I don't know much about its inner workings.  There's
  50. probably more on the www page.

  52. These all came together because the economic climate in Santa Cruz demands
  53. that a lot of folks our age, and many older, live communally.  There're
  54. also lots of folk in tents in backyards, trailers/rvs in driveways, etc. 
  55. The half-life on most households is about six months, but the three listed
  56. above have all held together for a couple of years.  Probably because
  57. a lot of the people knew each other before they moved in together, 
  58. unlike most households which usually form in the same manner as most
  59. garage bands and with about as much success.
